Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW) is a critical network function for the 4G mobile core network, known as the evolved packet core (EPC). The PGW acts as the interface between the LTE network and other packet data networks, such as the Internet or SIP-based IMS networks.

In the Long Term Evolution (LTE) architecture for the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), the PGW acts as an anchor for user plane mobility. User traffic can be filtered at the P-GW for quality-of-service (QoS) differentiation among multiple packet flows. The P-GW collects charging information and forwards these Charging Data Records (CDRs) for processing.
